Gordonsville loses a close game to Watertown Purple Tigers
By Ryan Nixon
Gordonsville @ Watertown – Friday, August 23, 2019
Gordonsville came up short on the road following a comeback, losing 19-13 to the Watertown Purple Tigers.
Neither team was able to get the offense going in the first quarter, but Watertown took a 7-0 lead at the start of the second quarter, following a quick, four-play drive that ended in a rushing touchdown.
The Tigers were looking to bounce back, driving a pretty good distance down the field before an interception gave the Purple Tigers back the ball. Watertown drove down the field, but the Tigers defense was able to stay strong and hold Watertown to a field goal attempt, which the Purple Tigers missed. Neither team was able to get anything else going before the end of the first half, with Watertown having a 7-0 lead.
Gordonsville’s offense wasn’t able to get going to start the second half, and Watertown drove down to extend their lead to 13-0 halfway through the third quarter.
The Tigers were able to score a touchdown with just under 3 minutes left in the third quarter following a Matthew Albritton to Wyatt Pemberton to make the score 13-7.
The Tigers were able to stop Watertown and force a fumble with about 30 seconds left in the third quarter. On the next play, Albritton was able to make a huge pass to Skyshn Washer downfield for a 38 yard pass over a Watertown defender. Albritton ran the ball in to tie the game at 13-13 in the fourth quarter.
Watertown was able to take a long drive and score with 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter to take a 19-13 lead. The Tigers couldn’t bounce back and were forced to punt the ball back.
Watertown drove the ball back but turned the ball over on downs deep in Gordonsville territory. The Tigers weren’t able to put anything together offensively, and turned the ball back over to the Purple Tigers on a fourth down sack. Watertown was able to kneel and wrap up the game, winning 19-13.
What’s Next?
The Tigers will host county rivals Smith County Owls next Friday at 7 p.m. Gordonsville will look to get their first win of the season and get their second straight win over the Owls after last year’s 20-12 win over their rivals.

by Ryan Nixon
The Tigers have had back to back undefeated seasons in their region, and Coach Clemons will look to continue his team’s success since taking over as head coach last season.
The Tigers are projected to finish first in the Region 4-1A and are the number 10 team in 1A according to Murphy Fair, but some of their top weapons and defenders graduating last year will give Clemons a challenge. Luckily for Gordonsville, they are returning every starting lineman on both sides of the ball. This should help relieve some pressure on the first year starters in the backfield and allow a little more room to learn in the first couple weeks. The Tigers have focused on strength this offseason, which will definitely help when combined with the team’s experience in the trenches.
Freshman Matthew Allbritton looks to be the starting quarterback after an impressive middle school career. Albritton was able to play in a few games for the high school team last year following the middle school season and should be able to make an impact his freshman year.
Senior Skyshn Washer will look to be a threat for the Tigers after a huge season last year. Washer is a threat through the air but also has the ability to gain yards on the ground when needed.
The team will look to Justin Hancock, Tristin Corthell, and Layton Cripps to provide a solid foundation on both sides of the ball. Hancock will line up as an offensive tackle and on the defensive line, where he made an impact last year. Corthell will line up as a guard and defensive lineman. He had 81 tackles last season. Cripps will also play guard and plays linebacker on defense. Cripps was able to provide some big plays defensively last year with three fumble recoveries. All three of these players received All-Region honors last season.
Schedule
( * signifies Region 4-1A matchup)
August 23 – @ Watertown
August 30 – Smith County
September 6 – @ Pickett County*
September 13 – @Trousdale County
September 20 – @ Clay County*
September 27 – Coalfield
October 4 – @Red Boiling Springs*
October 18 – Fayetteville
October 25 – @ Jo Byrns*
November 1 – Monterey*
Games to Watch
@ Smith County – August 24
The Carthage-Gordonsville game is a game that both teams have circled from the time the previous season ends. The Tigers were able to get the win last year, and Clemons will look to go 2-0 against the Owls when Gordonsville hosts Smith County after last years 20-12 win in Carthage.
@ Jo Byrns – October 25
Gordonsville beat Jo Byrns last season 25-7, but this late season matchup should have implications towards where each team finishes in Region 4-1A. The Jo Byrns Red Devils finished last season second in 4-1A, going 5-1 in the region.
Monterey – November 1
These two teams put on an exciting game last year, that saw the Tigers score a last minute touchdown to go ahead 29-27 and win. This years matchup could be just as close with the Monterey Wildcats projected to finish tied for second in the region with Jo Byrns. With it being the last game of the season, this game should have some added emotion if there are implications in the region.

Smith County Owls 2019 Football Preview
by Ryan Nixon
The Owls are hoping to change the culture surrounding their program under their new head coach, Scott Murray. The team has focused on bringing energy back to the program, starting with the fans. Players have also focused more on the weight room this offseason, which should help the team win some more battles throughout the game.
Smith County went 4-6 in the regular season last year, and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Red Bank. While last year saw the team use a number of younger players, the Owls have retained a high number of the team and will look to have a strong foundation by their senior class.
Senior quarterback Cameron Spivey will hope to build off of last season and direct an offense that retained a number of weapons from offense last season.
These weapons include seniors John Ross Hord, Jaden Apple-Gibbs, and Eli Martin. Hord will be the starting running back and linebacker and will look to be explosive coming out of the backfield. Wide receiver and defensive back Apple-Gibbs was one of Spivey’s top targets last season and will look to continue his success. Martin is a player that was able to find the end zone often last season, from a number of different positions. The team will look to him to play different positions on both sides of the ball.
Schedule
( * signifies Region 4-3A matchup)
August 23 – @ Macon County
August 30 – @ Gordonsville
September 6 – @ Upperman*
September 20 – @ York*
September 27 – Livingston Academy
October 4 – Sequatchie County*
October 11 – @ DeKalb County
October 18 – Cannon County*
October 25 – Stone Memorial
November 1 – Grundy County*
Games to Watch
@ Gordonsville – August 30
With the team’s focus on drawing energy from the crowd, this game will be huge for Coach Murray. Following the 20-12 loss last season, a win for Smith County would definitely help get Owls fans excited for the rest of the season and give the crowd a good impression of Murray. Expect this game to feature passion from both sides, which should mean a very good game to watch.
@ Upperman – September 6
Smith County’s first region game of the season is against the projected top team, so the Owls will not have to wait long to see where they stand. Upperman is returning talent with their roster that went 13-1 last season, with their only loss coming in the 3A semifinals to Alcoa. This will definitely be a difficult matchup for the Owls, but it will show a lot about this team.
Sequatchie County – October 4
Sequatchie finished second in the district last season, going 8-4. (4-1 in region 4-3A) The Indians will have high expectations this season, but with a number of younger players that are likely to get an opportunity this is a matchup the Owls could win. A win here would allow Smith County to catch some momentum going into the last portion of their schedule.
