Gordonsville came up short on the road following a comeback, losing 19-13 to the Watertown Purple Tigers.
Neither team was able to get the offense going in the first quarter, but Watertown took a 7-0 lead at the start of the second quarter, following a quick, four-play drive that ended in a rushing touchdown.
The Tigers were looking to bounce back, driving a pretty good distance down the field before an interception gave the Purple Tigers back the ball. Watertown drove down the field, but the Tigers defense was able to stay strong and hold Watertown to a field goal attempt, which the Purple Tigers missed. Neither team was able to get anything else going before the end of the first half, with Watertown having a 7-0 lead.
Gordonsville’s offense wasn’t able to get going to start the second half, and Watertown drove down to extend their lead to 13-0 halfway through the third quarter.
The Tigers were able to score a touchdown with just under 3 minutes left in the third quarter following a Matthew Albritton to Wyatt Pemberton to make the score 13-7.
The Tigers were able to stop Watertown and force a fumble with about 30 seconds left in the third quarter. On the next play, Albritton was able to make a huge pass to Skyshn Washer downfield for a 38 yard pass over a Watertown defender. Albritton ran the ball in to tie the game at 13-13 in the fourth quarter.
Watertown was able to take a long drive and score with 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter to take a 19-13 lead. The Tigers couldn’t bounce back and were forced to punt the ball back.
Watertown drove the ball back but turned the ball over on downs deep in Gordonsville territory. The Tigers weren’t able to put anything together offensively, and turned the ball back over to the Purple Tigers on a fourth down sack. Watertown was able to kneel and wrap up the game, winning 19-13.
What’s Next?
The Tigers will host county rivals Smith County Owls next Friday at 7 p.m. Gordonsville will look to get their first win of the season and get their second straight win over the Owls after last year’s 20-12 win over their rivals.
