The 2019 Gordonsville High School Football Team

The Tigers have had back to back undefeated seasons in their region, and Coach Clemons will look to continue his team’s success since taking over as head coach last season.

The Tigers are projected to finish first in the Region 4-1A and are the number 10 team in 1A according to Murphy Fair, but some of their top weapons and defenders graduating last year will give Clemons a challenge. Luckily for Gordonsville, they are returning every starting lineman on both sides of the ball. This should help relieve some pressure on the first year starters in the backfield and allow a little more room to learn in the first couple weeks. The Tigers have focused on strength this offseason, which will definitely help when combined with the team’s experience in the trenches.

Freshman Matthew Allbritton looks to be the starting quarterback after an impressive middle school career. Albritton was able to play in a few games for the high school team last year following the middle school season and should be able to make an impact his freshman year.

Senior Skyshn Washer will look to be a threat for the Tigers after a huge season last year. Washer is a threat through the air but also has the ability to gain yards on the ground when needed.

The team will look to Justin Hancock, Tristin Corthell, and Layton Cripps to provide a solid foundation on both sides of the ball. Hancock will line up as an offensive tackle and on the defensive line, where he made an impact last year. Corthell will line up as a guard and defensive lineman. He had 81 tackles last season. Cripps will also play guard and plays linebacker on defense. Cripps was able to provide some big plays defensively last year with three fumble recoveries. All three of these players received All-Region honors last season.

Games to Watch

@ Smith County – August 24

The Carthage-Gordonsville game is a game that both teams have circled from the time the previous season ends. The Tigers were able to get the win last year, and Clemons will look to go 2-0 against the Owls when Gordonsville hosts Smith County after last years 20-12 win in Carthage.

@ Jo Byrns – October 25

Gordonsville beat Jo Byrns last season 25-7, but this late season matchup should have implications towards where each team finishes in Region 4-1A. The Jo Byrns Red Devils finished last season second in 4-1A, going 5-1 in the region.

Monterey – November 1

These two teams put on an exciting game last year, that saw the Tigers score a last minute touchdown to go ahead 29-27 and win. This years matchup could be just as close with the Monterey Wildcats projected to finish tied for second in the region with Jo Byrns. With it being the last game of the season, this game should have some added emotion if there are implications in the region.
