SCI Spotlight: Morgan Wood, Women’s Wheelchair Basketball National Champion

Morgan Wood

Smith County Insider recently had the chance to sit down with Gordonsville native, Morgan Wood, and discuss her second NWBA Intercollegiate National Championship win. See interview below. A birth defect left Wood partially paralyzed, but she knew she had athletic strength and began her wheelchair basketball career in high school. After graduation, she started her college career at the University of Memphis. Wood later attended a summer wheelchair basketball camp at the powerhouse, University of Texas-Arlington, and fell in love with the school and program so much that she decided to transfer after her freshmen year. In the fall of 2013 is when Wood made her move to Texas. She was asked by the School Director to help her coach, Jason Nelms, form a women’s wheelchair basketball program at UT Arlington. In just under three years, Wood has helped her team recruit multiple players, which ultimately lead to two National Championship wins. Wood was recently selected to be 1 of 12 athletes to make the cut for the U.S. Women’s World Championships Wheelchair Basketball Team that will compete in the 2018 IWBF World Championships in Hamburg, Germany, in August. SCHS Soccer loses to Stone Memorial

The Owls played a non-district match last week against Stone Memorial, a AA school from Cumberland County. The Owls played hard and had the match tied until about the 65th minute when Stone Memorial took an Owl set piece and turned it into a counter attack and scored. The Owls could not regain any momentum and eventually gave up 2 more goals losing 5-2.

The Owls opened their scoring with a shot from Brett Gregory that hit the cross bar and was collected by Rolando Cruz who put it back into the middle. After several touches from multiple players the ball crossed the goal line to even the score at 1-1. It remained 1-1 until half time. The Owls second goal came from a series of nice passes in the middle and a nicely weighted pass up the middle to Zack Mendez who calmly finished his one-on-one opportunity.

“This is a good test to see where we are against good opponents. Stone Memorial is a bigger program with good players. I thought that we played very well except for 3-4 plays that cost us. I hope these types of games prepare our kids for the District and Region tournaments,” Coach Jenkins said.

The Owls play 6 district matches in the next 20 days.

SCHS Owls Soccer beats York 4-0

The Smith County Owls Soccer team played it’s second District match this week against York. Smith County had a dominant performance controlling the possession and netting 4 times and holding York to only 2 shots on goal.
Smith County opened the scoring in the 34th minute. Will Broyles sent a ball across the mouth of goal and Rolondo Cruz put it in. Less than 2 minutes later the Owls scored again as Tanner Marshall headed a corner kick back across the goal were Will Broyles was able to finish. The Owls had a 2-0 lead at half. The second half was more of the same, with the Owls dominating possession.
The Owls kept the momentum going, getting back on the scoreboard in the second half when Elijah Wright made a nice pass to Will Broyles, splitting the defense and giving Broyles an easy one on one with the keeper. This play led to Broyles scored his second of the game. The final goal was Zach Barclay making a nice shot.
The Owl’s defense did a good job of limiting York’s few attacking chances, only giving up 2 shots on their goal.
The Owls second match of the week was cancelled and rescheduled due to the weather and field conditions. The Owls play Stone Memorial on Thursday April 5 and then get back to District play the next week.
