This weekend is pretty typical of February, as our average highs begin to slip back up to that 50° mark and beyond. It’s still too cold for shorts and t-shirts, but it’s mild enough that you can spend time outdoors without worrying about coming inside feeling like a popsicle afterwards. ‘Meteorological Spring’ begins in just a little more than three weeks (March 1st – May 31st), so while actual Spring may still be a good ways off, the time of year meteorologists refer to as “Spring,” which is really more of our Springtime season anyway, isn’t too far off!
Sunday — Mostly sunny. Wake up: 29°, High: 54°. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph.
But…we’re nowhere near done with Winter quite yet.
A strong Arctic trough will begin to dig down into our area Sunday night, spreading all the way down to the Gulf Coast region by Monday evening. Along this trough, a series of ‘clipper’ systems will move into our area, setting the stage for a not-so-intriguing flurry/snow setup.
GFS — Sunday at Midnight:
Light rain showers will begin to move into our area from the north late Sunday night and into Monday morning (actual radar will likely look much less impressive than what the above GFS image shows).
NAM 4km — Monday at 3 PM:
During the day, we’ll likely see a mix of mostly light rain with some snow and flurries. Temperatures here at the surface will be well above freezing in the mid to upper 30s for much of the day, so whatever snow does fall will almost certainly not stick. As the trough begins to dig deeper into the South, temperatures at the surface will finally begin to cool to the freezing point and below, which will allow for snow to stick. The problem for all you snow lovers: there won’t be much moisture to create a big snowfall.

So yeah, this system really isn’t looking to be all that big of a deal. Maybe it will be enough to cause some issues on our more problem-prone roads, but not enough to shut down the entire county for literally days like the last epic snow maker we had a few weeks ago. Milk, bread, and prolific amounts of alcohol need not be purchased in preparation.
