After a momentum building victory over Clay County the previous week, the Gordonsville Tigers had a huge setback by host Trousdale County this past Friday night. Trousdale County, coming off back-to-back home losses, seem to do exactly what Gordonsville did to Clay County: take out some major league frustration. The Yellow Jackets looked focused and very determined right from the beginning of the contest as they quickly scored on their first two possessions after taking advantage of excellent field position. Those two possessions started inside Gordonsville’s territory at the 44 and 42 yard lines, and ended with runs of 29 and 13 yards for TDs by freshman QB Keyvont Baines.
Gordonsville had a timely defensive stop by senior cornerback Jacob Short as he picked off a Keyvont Baines’ attempted pass late in the 1st quarter. Neither team mounted any successful drives in the rest of the 1st half, but special teams played a role in the kicking game as Trousdale’s Matt Thomas ran back a punt for 58 yards to make the score 21-0 midway through the 2nd quarter. Gordonsville did show some life on offense as the Tigers put together a 13 play, 50 yard drive that took 5:30 off the clock. However, it ended at the Yellow Jackets 15 yard line with no points resulting. Trousdale Co. 21 – Gordonsville 0.
Gordonsville controlled the clock, the ball, and the tempo to start the 3rd quarter as they drove from their own 24 to Trousdale’s 30 yard line in 12 plays and using 6:28. Once again no points to show.
The Jackets engineered a long, sustained drive that mirrored Gordonsville’s: 12 plays, 70 yards and 6:54. A big difference to be noted: a Keyvont Baines to Austin Ford pass play resulted in Trousdale’s 4 TD of the night. Trousdale Co. 28 – Gordonsville 0.
Gordonsville’s second possession of the 2nd half ended in disaster as they turned over the ball on a fumble to the Jackets on their own 32 yard line. The Jackets capitalized on Gordonsville’s miscue by putting their fifth TD on the board thus causing the
mercy rule to kick in at the 5:11 mark to go in the 4th quarter. This started the customary wholesale substitution by both coaches as they began to put in their second units.
Braxton Givens continued to be Gordonsville’s main offensive weapon as he had 15 rushes for 79 yards followed by Sheldon Harris and Jesse Meadows with 8 and 10 rushes each for 16 and 18 yards respectively. Senior QB Damian Davis was 4 out of 9 for 24 yards with Koby Watts, Givens, Harris and Bill Washer making the receptions.
Gordonsville’s next game will be this coming Friday night (9/25) at Turney Ford Field as they will taking on new-comer to the region Jo Byrns for the Tigers’ homecoming. 7:00 p.m. start time.
