Director of Schools, Barry Smith, Releases Statement Regarding Tuesday’s Soccer Game Controversy

Smith County Director of Schools, Barry Smith, released the following statement regarding the article on Wednesday afternoon:
The Smith County Board of Education is committed first and foremost to student safety. I have investigated the incident involving the soccer game last night with Mt. Juliet Christian. After speaking with the principal and athletic director, I stand behind my coaches and administration. The game administrator and TSSAA officials were watching the weather closely. TSSAA protocol was followed at all times. At the time the MJCA coach removed his team from the match, the athletic director asked the head official if he (the official) was requesting a weather delay. The official replied, “No,” and to continue the game.
I expect our coaches and administration to always keep safety a first priority and will always err on the side of caution in situations like this following the guidelines set forth by the TSSAA. In regard to the report from the Lebanon Democrat, I have been given conflicting information. The football team did practice, and their practice was not cancelled due to weather. We are unaware of two deputies that were at the game. To our knowledge, there was only one, the School Resource Officer (“SRO”). The SRO that was present stated that he did not request a game delay or cancellation. According to our administration and SRO, the MJCA team and fans left the complex without incident. In addition, we appreciate the media who chose to get statements from both parties in the investigation before reporting the incident.”

Smith County’s Senior League All Stars representing Tennessee defeat Virginia and North Carolina in Southeast Regional Tournament
Game 1: Tennessee vs Virginia
SCLL All Stars Tennessee Seniors Defeat Virginia in pitcher’s duel. Both teams were strong on the mound Saturday, but Tennessee defeated Virginia 3-1.
Smith County (Tennessee) opened up with Virginia in the Southeast Regionals. After no score in the first inning, Smith Co. scored in the second, third and fourth to take a 3-0 lead, which helped propel Tennessee to victory. Virginia got one run in the sixth inning to make the final score 3 to 1. Hunter Mann pitched the first three innings followed by Nate Hate hall with one inning, Matthew Enoch 2.1 innings and Dustin Mimms 2/3 of an inning. They combined to throw a two-hitter. Layton Cripps and Jay Franklin had two hits a piece – Cripps one double and Franklin two singles. Nate Hall and Barrett Briggs both had one hit each – both singles. Bryson Neal had one hit and an RBI. Matthew Enoch had two sac flys for two RBIs. Winning pitcher: Hunter Mann
Game 2: Tennessee vs North Carolina
Four pitchers team up as Tennessee shuts out North Carolina 2-0 on Sunday as four pitchers combined to throw a shut out.
Smith County’s second game was against North Carolina. Dylan Hackett scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Runs were at a premium until Layton Cripps came up and hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead. North Carolina had the bases loaded after two Smith Co. errors, but a fly ball to center field ended the game for Smith County to go 2-0 in the tournament. Mann, Hall, Enoch and Mimms allowed five scattered hits to keep North Carolina from scoring. Layton Cripps had one hit – a homerun. Campbell Gregory had an RBI. Nate Hall, Bryson Neal and Barrett Briggs all added one hit each. Winning pitcher: Hunter Mann

Maryville: 0
Smith County began state tournament play against Maryville Saturday evening in Johnson City. Smith Co. took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Smith Co. scored two more runs in the third inning giving them a four-run lead, which would be unmatched by Maryville due to Colin Howell pitching a perfect game. Howell struck out 13, gave up no hits and had no walks or errors. Smith Co. was led in batting by Jake Taylor with three hits, Kevin Boles with two hits and Hayden Vance, Robert Preston and Colton Windham with one hit a piece.
Smith County: 12
Stewart County: 2
Smith County played Stewart County in their second game Sunday afternoon. Once again, Smith Co. took the lead early by scoring three runs at the top of the first inning. Stewart Co. answered back, scoring two runs to close out the first. It was all Smith Co. from the second inning, onward, with eight runs scored in the second followed by two runs in the third. Smith Co. maintained a 10-run lead through the fifth inning, which would be enough to secure the victory. Kevin Boles pitched two innings and Robert Preston pitched three. Tanner Coleman, Jake Taylor, Colin Howell, Cade Gregory, Trayson Davis and Eli Hix had one hit a piece.
With victories over Maryville and Stewart County, Smith County is one of only two undefeated teams at this point in tournament play with the other team being Morristown, who Smith Co. faces Monday. Whichever team wins Monday is guaranteed to play in the state championship game Wednesday. The losing team will play again Tuesday, with the winner of that game advancing to Wednesday’s championship.

Little League All-Stars Roadblock Fundraiser for State Tournament Expenses
The Smith County Little League 12u Allstars will be holding a Roadblock, this Saturday July 15th, in Carthage and in Gordonsville between the hours of 8am and Noon. Please help show your support for these young men, who are the Little League District 2 Champions, by making a donation to help with expenses as they get ready to play in the State Little League Tournament in Columbia Tennessee, starting July 22nd. Any donation made will be greatly appreciated!

Pittsburgh Pirates draft Steven Jennings in the 2nd Round of the MLB Draft
“This has been a dream come true. This has been a dream of mine to play professional baseball since I was old enough to know really what baseball was. It is absolutely a dream come true to make that dream a reality. Its awesome. I can’t really describe how I am feeling. I can’t tell you how thankful and grateful I am to be in the position I am in right now,” Jennings told WJLE Monday night after his selection was announced.
Jennings was a two-sport star at DCHS in baseball and football, as he was named the offensive MVP of his high school district as a junior. But he tore his ACL during a football game last September, an injury that ended his football season. Still he was named the football team’s MVP his senior year. The torn ACL didn’t keep Jennings off the mound, however, as he kept pitching while wearing a knee brace.
Jennings’ fastball sits at 89-92 mph and touches 95 mph, and the 6-foot-2, 175-pounder could add more velocity as he develops. The athletic 18-year-old also throws a slider, curveball and changeup. Jennings posted a 0.54 ERA with 99 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings for DCHS in his senior season.
Following his junior season, Jennings offered up a pledge to the Ole Miss Rebels and later signed a letter of intent, but with his selection in the draft he will now turn pro. ‘I am going to sign with the Pirates. We haven’t really worked out the details of when I am going to Pittsburgh to sign yet but we will probably work that out tomorrow or within the next couple of days for a time I can get up there and get all the paper work done,” Jennings told WJLE.
Jennings said he wasn’t surprised to have been taken so early in the second round. “We had said we thought it would be late in the first round or early in the second round so it was right around where we had pictured it being,” he continued.
His father Randy Jennings, said Steven will soon be leaving for Tampa, Florida to play his rookie ball. “Steven will get his orders probably later in the week as to when he is going to leave. They have told us it may be toward the end of the week. He will be going to their rookie ball league just outside of Tampa, Florida so he will be going there for the rest of the summer for his rookie ball,” said Randy Jennings.
As he celebrates reaching this important goal in his own life, Steven took a moment to offer up some words of encouragement for youngsters growing up in DeKalb County today.
“For any of the little boys or even little girls in DeKalb County, if you want to do something don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t do it. Just work really hard. Stay humble and take all the opportunities you can and make the most of them. Don’t take anything for granted. You only get so many opportunities to do what you want with your life and you can’t let them slip by. Work really hard and stay grateful for everything you have and try to accomplish your goals,” Jennings concluded.
