Carr: Black Silence on A.G. Opinion Reveals Weakness of Leadership

April 12, 2016

SIXTH DISTRICT, TENN. (APRIL 12, 2016) – 6th District conservative Republican candidate Joe Carr claimed today that the silence of Representative Diane Black in the face of an opinion issued by the Tennessee Attorney General that embraces allowing men into the locker rooms and bathrooms of little girls reveals a serious failure of leadership. A legal opinion on the “transgender bathroom legislation” (HB2414) by Herbert H. Slatery III (Tennessee attorney general appointed by Governor Haslam) says that requiring students to use bathrooms based on their gender at birth may be a violation of the federal Education Amendments of 1972 of Title IX. Slatery asserted that Tennessee could lose over a billion dollars if the bill is passed.

Former State Representative Carr pointed out that the Haslam Administration’s opposition to the legislation is wrong and that the silence of Diane Black shows she is more interested in “going along to get along with the Establishment insiders rather than standing up for what is right.”

Appearing this morning on the Frankie Lax radio show on WTJS in Jackson, Tennessee Carr said: “We have men potentially dressing up as women running into little girls’ bathrooms.” Carr strongly denounced Slatery’s opinion “because the courts have already ruled on the issue.” “His opinion (Slatery) does not even cite court decisions in this regard; it cites the Obama administration policy. There have already been a couple of courts decisions that have said transgender is not a sex and therefore is not subject to Title IX Funding.” Slatery’s opinion is not based on law, Carr noted, it is based on promoting a liberal social agenda at the expense of the safety of our children.

“Time after time we in Tennessee have to battle against Obama’s liberal progressive agenda while the Republican establishment in Washington sits quietly and refuses to fight back. The result is the principles and values that founded this great Republic are under constant assault. I am very disappointed that Diane Black is failing to speak out on this issue and I call on her today to join me in not only condemning this fatally flawed opinion but to call on Governor Haslam to support and sign HB2414 so we can protect our children.” says Carr. “This is another example of why I am running for office and why this election is so important. We cannot expect any changes in Washington until we change the people we SEND to Washington to represent us.”
