Born August 2, 1955 in Tyler, TX, James was the third child of Robert Milton Loving and Elizabeth Aleftina Lovin. He was one of the first computer sciences students at UTPB. Subsequently, Jim became certified as a Registered Professional Land Surveyor in Texas. He practiced as a land surveyor until the mid-1980’s, when he was drawn again to computer science at its intersection with land surveying. He retained a professional interest in computers and land surveying until 2001, when he accepted a position at the University of Miami. Based at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Facility in Ft.
