Mr. Hulon Holland

A retired Defeated Creek Community resident, Mr. Hulon Holland, departed this life at 8:55 p.m. Friday evening September 13, 2024 at the Smith County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage where he was last admitted July 31st suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Mr. Holland was 90.

He was transferred from Smith County Health and Rehabilitation Center to the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home Friday night.

His family made arrangements Saturday afternoon September 14th at 2p.m. for Mr. Holland to be cremated at the Cumberland Family Services in Algood as had been requested by him.

He was one of eight children, five sons and three daughters, of the late George Curtis “Kirk” Holland who died July 17, 1989 at the age of 89 and Clellie Hesbie Cook Holland who died October 8, 1979 at the age of 76 and was born Hulon John Holland in the Bagdad Community on November 9, 1933.

The six siblings preceding him in death were; Winnie Bell Holland, an 8-month-old infant sister who died July 9, 1922, Opal Oline Holland Howell who died January 29, 1990 at the age of 66, Paul Leon Holland who died April 19, 1991 at the age of 71, Aaron Dillard “A” Holland who died November 25, 1995 at the age of 70, Darwin Fredrick Holland who died October 27, 2014 at the age of 83 and Margie Irene Holland Forkum who died February 1, 2022 at the age of 93.

Mr. Holland was also preceded in death by three sons, Tony Key Holland who died as an infant on January 6, 1966 at the age of 2 years and 4 months, Terry Dale Holland who died February 14, 1983 at the age of 18 after falling asleep on Carthage Highway at the East end of the Lebanon City limits following leaving his job at the former Ponderosa Steak House in Lebanon.

and Charles Neil Holland who died October 25, 2014 at the age of 46.  

Mr. Holland was wed to Defeated Creek Community native, the former Thelma Jean Kittrell Kemp, at the Dycus Circuit parsonage in Kempville on August 28, 1982. The ceremony was performed by the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church Pastor, Bro. Kingsley.

Also, preceding Mr. Holland in death was a step-son, James Harvey Kemp Jr. who died following a battle with cancer at the age of 34 on November 26, 1987.

Mr. Holland was an accomplished trim carpenter and was employed for over forty years by the former Dillehay Brothers Construction Company.

He was saved as a young man, had been baptized and was a member of the Smith Memorial United Methodist Church on Smith Bend Lane in the Gladdice Community of Jackson County.

Surviving in addition to his wife Jean of just over forty-two years are Mr. Holland’s two sons, Gerry Holland and wife Kristine of Baxter, Donnie “Pete” Holland of the Rock City Community; step son, Jeff Kemp and wife Teresa Reece Kemp of the Difficult Community, sister-in-law, Reba Richardson Holland; brother, Lillard Holland of the Bagdad Community; four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
