Mr. Ernie Jakes
Mr. Ernie Jakes Sr. of the Sullivans Bend Community died peacefully at 2:02 a.m. Tuesday morning September 3, 2019, at his Preston Lane farm home with his wife and son Ernie Jr. at his bedside. Mr. Jakes suffered from lung cancer and was under the loving care of Kindred Hospice of Cookeville.
Mr. Jakes was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home and was cremated at Cumberland Family Services in Algood. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2019, at 12:00 noon at Edgar Evins State Park – Pavilion 2 and 3.
He was one of two sons born to the late Elzie Sherman Jakes who died at the age of 65 on September 20, 1980 and Mary Grady Stilwell Jakes who died at the age of 87 on March 18, 2009, and was born Ernest Sherman Jakes in Tampa in Hillsborough County, Florida on June 25, 1952.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Grady Sherman Jakes, who died at the age of 57 on March 8, 2007.
On June 8, 1974 he was united in marriage to Nashville native the former Valerie Ann Williamson.
Mr. Jakes retired in 2003 and he and his wife purchased their farm on Preston Lane.
He had a twenty five year career as an engineer and Emergency Medical Technician with the Metro Nashville-Davidson County Fire Department. Mr. Jakes spent the majority of his career at Metro Station 9, better known as “The Bottoms”, and was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters.
Mr. Jakes attended the former Isaac Litton High School on Gallatin Road in Madison and received his E. M. T. training and an Associates Degree from Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin.
He was an avid golfer.
Surviving in addition to his wife Valerie of over forty five years are their two sons, Elliott Sean Jakes and wife Heather of Joelton, Ernest Stillwell “Ernie” Jakes Jr. of the Sullivans Bend Community; granddaughter, Whitley June Jakes.
