Saturday, September 12th marks the date for the annual Kidz Central Celebration. The event will be held at Crump Paris Park from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The event is held to help promote health and wellness in the community and will be free to the public. There will be free food, door prizes, and giveaways. Several exhibits will be set up including: fire and safety education, Riverview Regional Medical Center, traffic safety, emergency vehicles, Smith County Health Department, Department of Children’s Services, Smith County Backpack program, and the Smith County Drug Coalition just to name a few.
A very special guest will be in attendance at this year’s celebration. Guy Gilchrist, an internationally published writer and cartoonist, will be joining the festivities. Gilchrist is best known for his work on one of the longest running cartoon strips, NANCY. He has also drawn such well-known characters as the Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, and the Pink Panther. He has won numerous awards including National Cartoonists Society Reuben Category Award for Best Illustrator and the International Reading committee of United Nations Children’s Choice Awards for Best Book of the Year.
The one mile Family Fun Run/Walk will be held at the walking track near the soccer field. This run will be open to all ages and a great way to get your kids engaged in physical activity. A costume contest will take place along with the Fun Run. The theme will be Pixar/Disney characters. There will be three categories for this contest: individuals, couples, families, stroller families, and seniors. The winner from each category will receive a free 3-month membership to the Smith County Wellness Center. The Best Dressed themed participant will receive a family outdoor activity kit. Registration starts at 9am and the race will begin promptly at 10:15am.
Two Smith County schools will receive $200 based on the school with the greatest percentage of student participation. Group one will be composed of all the elementary schools in the county including Smith County Middle School. Group two will include GHS and SCHS.
