Smith County lost an outstanding citizen with the unexpected passing of Heather Webster Thompson on June 14, 2013. However, she left behind many great memories to anyone who knew her, because of her warm personality, welcoming smile, and positive attitude.
Heather was an outstanding 4-H member in Smith County during her 9 years as a 4-H’er. She was an active local club, Honor Club, All-Star, and Livestock Project member.
Heather excelled at showing her sheep at the regional, state, and national level, exhibiting not only in 4-H, but in shows all over the Southeast. In fact, she won many awards at the Tennessee 4-H Sheep Expo including Reserve Grand Champion Commercial Ewe in 2004 and Reserve Grand Champion Commercial Ewe and Grand Champion Ewe Lamb in 2005. She also won Reserve Champion Crossbred Whether, Reserve Champion Suffolk, and Supreme Grand Champion at the Tennessee State Fair in 2005.
Heather was not only an excellent showman, but a first class sportsman. She was always first to congratulate others on their own successes and supported everyone in their efforts. Because of her excellence both inside and outside of the show ring, Heather was honored with the Heather Webster Thompson Memorial Cup which is presented annually to the Commercial Ewe Grand Champion exhibitor at the Tennessee 4-H Sheep Expo. The memorial award was donated by Dick and Brenda Horner of Horner Show Lambs of Vandalia, Illinois.
The 2015 recipient was Brooklyn Ellis of Macon County. This was Brooklyn’s second consecutive year to receive this honor. Heather’s grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Doyle Webster, parents, Mark and Charlotte Webster, and niece and nephew, Zoie and Zane Thompson were on hand to present the award in Heather’s memory.
