On Febraury 2, 2020 at approximately 11 a.m. Deputy Nathan Williams conducted a traffic stop on I40 near exit 254. A registration check of the Chevrolet Silverado indicated an expired tag. Deputy WIlliams made contact with the driver David Wayne Banks of Gordonsville, TN. Banks was able to produce the title of the vehicle which he said he had purchased about 2 weeks ago. However, Banks was not able to show a current drivers licenses, updated registration or proof of insurance.
Deputy Williams, being aware of Banks background, asked about his probation status. Banks indicated that he was on drug probation. Deputy Williams asked Banks to exit the vehicle and asked for permission to search the vehicle. Consent to search was granted. Upon searching the vehicle a baggie containing 7.0 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine was found in a sunglasses case. Another bag containing 1 gram of Heroin and syringes was also discovered. Several debit, credit cards and IDs were also found that did not belong to Banks were also discovered in the trunk of the vehicle. Additionally it was discovered that the tags on the vehicle had been deliberating altered by removing an old registration decal and placing a current 2022 in its place.
Banks was charged with possession of controlled substances, alteration of tags, felony possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while in possession of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine. He was transported to the Smith County Jail.
