September 2, 2022

“Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.” – Jim Rohn

We’ve got a busy few weeks coming up at the UT Extension office with several events on the calendar that are sure to provide outstanding educational content. Remember, “When we meet, we eat!”, so all of these events will feature a meal which makes pre-registration critical for planning purposes.

Beef & Forage Supper – Dr. Katie Mason, UT Extension Nutritionist, will be at the Smith County Ag Center on September 13 at 6:00 p.m. for our Beef & Forage Supper. She will discuss a variety of pasture management topics. The event is free, and the Smith County Cattlemen’s Association will sponsor a beef meal, but you must RSVP to the UT Extension office at 615-735-2900 by September 9.

Master Beef Class – UT Extension Smith County is partnering with UT Extension Trousdale County to offer Master Beef Producer classes this fall. In order to receive certification, producers will need to attend four nights of in-person classes at the Trousdale County Ag Complex (September 27 & 29 and October 4 & 6) as well as the Upper Cumberland Grazing Summit on October 1. The cost to attend and receive certification is $100 which includes a meal each night as well as registration for the Grazing Summit.

Upper Cumberland Small Ruminant Conference – Join the Upper Cumberland Extension Team for their annual Upper Cumberland Small Ruminant Conference on September 30 & October 1, 2022. This two-day event will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. both days. Day #1 will be at the Smith County Ag Center on Friday, September 30 and will feature informational sessions from experts on a variety of topics, such as Genetics & Selection, Small Ruminant Health, a Producer Panel Discussion, and some Hands-On Demonstrations.

Day #2 will be Saturday, October 1 in conjunction with the Upper Cumberland Grazing Summit, where producers will have the opportunity to get hands-on in the pasture with YouTube star and “Regenerative Rancher” Greg Judy. Early-Bird Registration is open until September 16. The cost to attend is $100 to receive Master Producer Certification or $25 to attend without certification. You can register at the UT Extension office or online at tiny.utk.edu/smallruminantsummit.

Upper Cumberland Grazing Summit – The Upper Cumberland Grazing Summit will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Wilson Farms (3630 Lee Seminary Road Cookeville, TN 38506). Greg Judy from Rucker, MO will be with us to discuss a variety of grazing and forage management topics. Known as “The Regenerative Rancher” on his popular YouTube channel, Greg is a highly sought-after speaker and author. The program will be from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and will be hands-on in the pasture. This will be a terrific learning opportunity for anyone wanting to learn to be a better manager of their pastures, regardless of livestock species.

Early bird registration for the Grazing Summit is $25 if you register before September 16. Lunch will be provided. To register, come by the UT Extension office or go online to tiny.utk.edu/grazingsummit. For more information on these events, visit our website at smith.tennessee.edu.
