Beginning in 2019, Tennessee producers were able to compete in a statewide soybean yield contest sponsored by UT Extension and the TN Soybean Checkoff. This new contest was designed to provide an opportunity to recognize high yielding producers across the state, while also identifying sound production practices that are consistent to high yield farmers.

Awards were given in 5 districts across the state, and local producer John Russell was named winner of the Northern Middle TN Region. His NuTech beans yielded an impressive 86.41 bushels per acre. For perspective, the state average is 47 bushels per acre. In addition to winning the regional contest, he also had the 4th highest yield in the state in the non-irrigated category.

John has participated in the University of Tennessee Extension variety testing program for the past 3 years. He farms alongside his father, Jackie Russell, in Macon, Smith, and Jackson counties. John is currently studying Agriculture Engineering Technology at Tennessee Tech University.
