UT Extension News: “Drone Workshop for Farmers”

January 6, 2020

by Chris Hicks, County Director – UT Extension-Smith County

Area farmers looking to learn more about the use of drones in agriculture will have an opportunity to participate in a 3-hour drone workshop from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on February 6 at the Smith County Chamber of Commerce.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), better known as drones, are not a new technology, but their use in agriculture is fairly new and has picked up steam in the last few years. With the world’s population continuing to rise, agriculture producers will need to continue adopting new technology, and drones may be one of those.

The Drone Workshop for Farmers, which is being hosted by TSU and UT Extension, will provide both hands on training and a classroom approach. Participants will learn how to fly a drone through real, hands-on experience with a Phantom 4 Pro drone.

In addition to flying the drone, we will also discuss how drones can be used in different agricultural applications, the various types of drone options and costs, and laws and regulations for their use.

This workshop is free and will include a meal, however space is limited to the first 15 people to sign up. For questions or to register, call UT Extension in Smith County at 615-735-2900.
