Progress continues on the new Caney Fork Bridge on Highway 70 as TDOT makes repairs to reopen it to traffic.
The bridge was closed in January after TDOT construction personnel and bridge inspectors observed hairline cracks that developed in the concrete pier caps, which sit on top of the bridge columns.
As a result of the weak pier caps, TDOT contractors have been constructing walls underneath the bridge to support the existing piers.
Motorists have had to take a lengthy detour around the construction site, leading to extensive traffic congestion along SR 53 in Gordonsville around the I-40 exit, particularly during mornings and afternoons when school is in session.
According to TDOT, only two piers are left with remaining work, and both are now out of the water and able to be worked on.
TDOT says if work can continue as planned and scheduled with no unforeseen issues arising, the contractor should have the bridge open to traffic by July 31 or sooner.
