(Smith County Insider Press) Elmwood, Tenn. – On Monday, February 8, Sgt. Junior Fields and Deputy Nick Campbell of the Smith County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to Preston Lane in Elmwood due to the report of an unwanted guest in the home of Velma Claypool. Mrs. Claypool was awoken by the sound of a male voice inside her home. She recognized the man in her living room to be her neighbor Ernest Jakes Jr. He was without shoes and talking irrationally.
When asked why he was in her home, Jakes replied that he was in his home. Mrs. Claypool asked Jakes to leave at which he replied, “No you need to go”. Jakes proceeded to chase Mrs. Claypool through her home. He eventually exited the home, put on his boots, and wandered around Mrs. Claypool’s yard before walking down the road.
He was later found by Sgt. Fields and Deputy Campbell lying in the snow approximately 40 yards behind the home neighboring Mrs. Claypool’s. He was found to be in possession of a small bag of marijuana and rolling papers. Jakes was taken in to custody by Sgt. Fields and Deputy Campbell and transported to the Smith County Jail Facility for booking.
He was charged with Aggravated Burglary, Assault, Possession of a Schedule VI drug, and drug paraphernalia. Jakes bond was set at $7,500.
