(Smith County Insider Press) Carthage, Tenn. – Each year over 1.5 million students participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT test. The top 16,000 highest scoring students in each state will continue in the scholarship competition. About 34,000 of these students are named Commended Students.
Two Seniors, Alex Chaney and Christina Barnett, were recognized at the last Smith County Board of Education meeting for demonstrating exceptional academic ability and potential for success.
Alex Chaney was recognized for achieving the commended status for his high score by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Alex’s parents are Wayne and Janice Chaney
Christina Barnett was recognized as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. Less than one percent of the nation’s high school graduating seniors qualify as semifinalists in each National Merit Program. She is among those 16,000 high scorers. Christina will be competing to become one of the finalists, and those finalists will receive a National Merit Scholarship with a value of at least $2500. Christina’s parents are Stan and Christy Barnett.
We would like to congratulate both Christina and Alex. We would like to further wish the best of luck to Christina on possibly being chosen as a finalist.
