Two Men Arrested During Traffic Stop for Headlights Not Being On

July 18, 2016

An arrest was made following a traffic stop for headlights not being on in South Carthage Friday evening, last week.

Sgt. Junior Fields with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office made a traffic stop on a 2013 Hyundai Elantra after observing the vehicle with no lights on upon meeting the it on the Cordell Hull Bridge.

Upon stopping the vehicle and asking to speak with the driver, identified as 24-year-old Preston Price of Carthage, Fields advised Price that if he had anything illegal that he wanted to hand over, he could do that, and at that time, he had the passenger, identified as 20-year-old Joel Tyree of Buffalo Valley, hand him a marijuana pipe.

Both men allegedly admitted to having smoked marijuana that day.

Fields had Price step out of the vehicle and inquired about anything else being inside, at which he stated that a jar was in the vehicle but nothing was in it.

Fields spoke with the passenger again and told him to hand him the jar, at which he observed a small amount of marijuana and a white pill which was identified as ecstasy — a Schedule I drug.

Price and Tyree were both placed under arrest and transported to the Smith County Jail Facility for booking.

Price is charged with Possession of Schedule IV, Possession of Schedule VI, and Felony Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
