(Smith County Insider Press) — A 2016 resolution to name the new bridge crossing the Caney Fork on Highway 70 in honor of Captain James Donald Stallings was officially adopted by Tennessee’s 110th General Assembly on August 31, 2017.
Captain James Donald Stallings served in the United States Army as a member of the 337th Radio Research Company, 509th Army Security Agency Group, Army Security Agency and the United States Army Republic of Vietnam.
He died in combat during hostile ground battle in South Vietnam on September 25, 1966, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on October 5, 1966. Following his death, he was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
