(Smith County Insider Press) Around 7:15 PM Sunday evening, July 5, Smith County 911 received a call of a mobile home on fire in the Hiwassee community. The Smith County, Rock City/Rome, Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched and arrived to find smoke coming out of the house. The fire was extinguished, and the firefighters left the scene.
Just minutes after departing, a second call was received which indicated the trailer was now completely engulfed in flames. The Fire Department returned to the scene and once again extinguished the flames. However, the home and its contents were destroyed.
After the second call, the Smith County Sheriff’s Department was asked to investigate the circumstances surrounding the blaze. They, in turn, requested that the state’s bomb and arson squad be called in to investigate the cause of the fire along with Smith County Fire Investigator Jason Powell.
Updates will come as the investigation progresses.
