On June 1, SCHS began a Summer Bridge Program for incoming freshmen with funding provided by 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grants. Students meet every weekday (June 1-June 21) and explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, ART, and Math), do physical activities, explore career paths, and take field trips.
Students involved with the program research and explore prospective job opportunities within the county. Being a part of the incoming freshmen class, students will take part in activities that may help them choose a career for the future. Careers being explored include: business, banking, engineering, medical, and local government. Local businesses and agencies will provide students with information on the educational requirements necessary to pursue that particular career path. Students will be visiting Citizens Bank, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Cordell Hull Lake, Riverview Regional Hospital, and DANA Driveshaft Products, LLC. Several agencies will also visit the group at SCHS this summer to present programs.
County Mayor Nesbitt is providing students with a mini Youth Leadership tour focusing on law and government. Students will visit the Smith County Courts, Smith County Archives, Smith County Landfill, and the Smith County Offices in the Turner Building.
To help freshmen succeed, we believe attending the program makes the transition to high school easier.
