Smith County Weather Report – October 24, 2019

October 24, 2019

by Steve Norris, Smith County Insider Weather Correspondent:

Much of Smith County had already picked up two to three inches of rain in October going into this big rain system that will be with us from Friday through Saturday night and it could easily give us several more inches of rainfall. Looks like the drought is definitely broken.

November is usually one of our wetter months. It is going to remain relatively cool through the middle of next week with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. There is a stronger system coming near Halloween with some much colder weather and possibly some moisture, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we get the first reports of snowflakes in Middle Tennessee on Halloween… Stay tuned for more on that!

October 20th Marked the 149th anniversary of the official weather record-keeping in Middle Tennessee in 1870 with an office in Nashville. The earliest one inch snow on record in Middle Tennessee is October 30th 1925.

Can you believe that when we set our clocks back November 3rd? Sunset will be at 4:45 p.m. Oh good grief! as Charlie Brown would say. At least the sun will be coming up early with sunrise at 6:09 a.m. The state legislature has approved Tennessee staying on daylight savings time year round but only if it is approved Nationwide so nothing will change for the volunteer state at this time.

Our night sky continues to feature the planet Jupiter to the Southwest after sunset and a half moon rises in the Eastern sky in the early morning after 3 a.m.
