Smith County Weather Report – October 17, 2019

October 17, 2019

by Steve Norris, Smith County Insider Weather Correspondent

We picked up some pretty decent rain totals not only in Smith County but across Middle Tennessee early Wednesday morning. Our next chances of rain will come late Saturday and Saturday night and again on Monday.

We are in a pretty active weather pattern with these fronts moving quickly across the country and the one coming on Monday could even bring the threat of some heavy rain and maybe a few severe thunderstorms. We can get some pretty intense thunderstorms this time of the year with the battle of the air masses.

We get back to Sunshine and high temperatures around 70 degrees from the 22nd to the 25th and then another cool spell for the last 5 days of October with highs only in the low 60s.

It will be interesting to see when we get our first chance of snowflakes, nothing during the next two weeks which is about as far as we can accurately predict in my opinion. After the school tours that have visited my office this fall, there is one thing I have discovered after our talks. Teachers look forward to snow just about as much as students! October can sure bring some wild swings in the weather. On the 10th of October 1980 the temperature hit 90 degrees but on the other hand, October 22nd 1987 temperatures dropped to 27 degrees in many areas so these wild swings like we have seen this month are not that unusual.

The days continue to get shorter as we move deeper into autumn. In our evening sky, the planet Jupiter is the brightest one in the southwestern sky but it gets lower as the evening progresses, and then the Moon starts rising in the East.
