Smith County Weather Report – August 22, 2019

August 22, 2019

by Steve Norris, Smith County Insider Weather Correspondent:

We are going into a period of unsettled weather in Smith County. Showers and thunderstorms are quite likely through Saturday, and a 50% chance will continue from Sunday through Tuesday.

I expect many of these will produce heavy downpours and cloud-to-ground lightning. 12 people have now been killed across the country by lightning this summer. 6 were camping or fishing, 3 were walking or hiking, one riding a motorcycle and 2 working on a roof. If you hear thunder at this time of year, go inside immediately, as the storm can be directly overhead of you in a very short time.

A little bit of a cool-down is coming with highs mostly in the mid-to-upper 80s for the remainder of August and the first few days of September. I think those days with a heat index of 100 are gone for a while and not a moment too soon for most, I’m sure!

It’s football time in Tennessee! Scattered thunderstorms will be possible for Friday night high school action, so be sure and have the umbrella along. In some years we get frost in early to mid October, but after the summer we have endured isn’t it hard to believe that we could have Frost in 6 to 8 weeks?

There are indications that the hurricane season is going to start picking up before too long, and that can always have a big impact on our weather eventually. NOAA is forecasting two to four major hurricanes of Category 3 or greater intensity, there is no way to say this early whether any will hit the U.S.
