As of Wednesday, March 29, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office will be transitioning to a completely digital radio system.
For many years, all Smith County Agencies have used analog radio systems. In recent history, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office has been experiencing problems with their analog radio system, due to interference from surrounding counties.
Sheriff Steve Hopper has filed a complaint with the FCC pertaining to the interference from surrounding agencies, but has yet to hear a response.
To ensure the safety of his officers and to comply with the upcoming FCC mandates requiring the change to digital, Sheriff Hopper has decided to go ahead and transition away from the analog system to completely digital.
Anyone currently using an analog scanner will no longer be able to receive radio transmissions from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Hopper stated, “In years past, scanner listeners have played a vital role in helping the Sheriff’s Office. For that reason, I have been very hesitant to make this change.”
