Bearwaller Gap Trail
(Smith County Insider Press) Defeated, Tenn. — On Sunday afternoon, January 21, Smith County 911 received a call from a woman who reported her and her three children were lost on Bearwaller Gap Trail in Defeated, TN. The Smith County Rescue Squad was called to the scene along with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.
Reportedly, the woman and her children began hiking on the trail around 1:30pm. While hiking, they accidentally ventured off of the trail and could not make their way back before the sun went down. They were reported to have been from the Kempville Community.
Rescue Squad Members began searching for them by foot and by water. They were quickly located by rescue squad members. Due to the steep embankment where the hikers were located, the Smith County Rescue Squad Rope Team was called to assist with the rescue.
The Rope Team was able to use pulleys to bring the woman and her children up the embankment, and back on to the trail.
During the rescue operation of the woman and her three children, dispatchers received another unrelated call reporting a woman and a dog also missing on Bearwaller Gap Trail. The woman was reported to have been visiting Smith County from Memphis.
Rescue Squad members and Sheriff’s Deputies were able to successfully rescue all five people without injury.
The names of the victims were not immediately released.
