Chief Sonny Carter received a plaque from Jacky Carver, Sr. in appreciation for his 30 years of service.

Longtime Smith County Rescue Squad Chief Sonny Carter stepped down from the position effective July 31, 2023 at midnight. Chief Carter joined the rescue squad in 1980. He has been a member of the organization for 43 years and served as Chief for 30 years. At the regular meeting of the squad in July, Chief Carter informed the members of his decision to retire. He stated he would still be an active member as much as possible but after 30 years in the position it was time to retire. Those members present gave the Chief and standing ovation in recognition of his service to the squad and the residents of the county that he so faithfully served.

At the squads regular meeting on August 1st, Chief Carter was recognized for his service by the members and presented a plaque by Jacky Carver Sr, one of the original charter members of the squad. Chief Carter spoke emotionally of his time as Chief pointing out the good times, the bad times, and the sad times of holding the position. He recognized all the dedicated members of the squad that helped him during these many years. Most importantly he wanted to thank his family, and most of all his wife, Mrs. Peggy Carter for her loving support of him being in this position over the years.

Chief Carter is also the County’s EMA Director & Fire Chief; he will continue to serve in that position. Long time Captain Richie Bausch was elected as interim Chief at the August meeting.
