The Smith County Juvenile Court issued a statement to all minors that vaping could result in a loss of the minor’s cell phone. In a statement posted by the court, Judge Branden Bellar made it clear that the enforcements would be strict for minors who are convicted, he states ¨ The unruly and/or delinquent juvenile offender will have his/her cell phones, smart phones, tablets, electronic devices used for any form of communication seized.¨
With a massive uprising in vape usage between the Smith County student body and non-students, the ruling is meant to hold minors accountable and to cut down on the overall cases of vaping. This ruling comes after many confirmed instances of using vaping, tobacco, alcohol, and other controlled substances. It is also mentioned that many of the minors ignore health concerns and substance abuse while taking these products.
The ruling can also affect the guardians of the minor, a court order can be placed upon the minor and their guardian for using a device or any terms of deposition while on probation. Both parties are responsible for the potential enforcement of the penalty of contempt.
The order went into effect on December 2nd, 2022.
