Matthew Lynn
Matthew Lynn is the valedictorian of the 2018 graduating class of Smith County High School. He is the son of Allison Carver and Johnny Lynn, and he is the grandson of the late Roy and Robbie Carver. Matthew’s hobbies include working at Sav-Way, serving as a public address announcer at school events, and operating the media equipment at his church, First Baptist Church Carthage. Matthew has served as the president of the Beta Club, vice president of the Interact Club, and has been an active member of the Science and Math club and Black and Gold Paper Staff. Matthew has been honored by having the opportunity to attend the American Legion Boys State, attending the Tennessee Governor’s School for Business and IT Leadership, being a recipient of the Tennessee Washington Youth Tour Scholarship, and being named a J.O. McClurkan Scholar at Trevecca Nazarene University. Matthew faithfully serves the needs of his church, and also enjoys volunteering with the local Rotary Club and at elementary schools throughout the county. After high school, Matthew intends to attend the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and pursue a degree in communications with an emphasis in public relations, hoping to one day work for the University of Tennessee’s athletic department.
Ethan Kyle Fox
The salutatorian of the class of 2018 is Ethan Kyle Fox. Ethan is the son of Aaron and Janice Fox and the grandson of Edward and Jeanette Massey of Carthage and John and Susan Fox of New Market. Ethan enjoys playing soccer for the Owls, which he has done for 4 years, watching Netflix, and spending time with friends. Ethan is a member of Peyton Creek Baptist Church and works at Smith County Drug Center as a pharmacy technician. He has been a member of the Beta Club for 6 years, the HOSA Club for 4 years, and the Interact Club for 4 years, where he frequently volunteers throughout his community. Ethan had received honors for perfect attendance as well as academic excellence at Smith County High School. Ethan plans to attend the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and major in pre-medicine before attending medical school to become a cardiothoracic surgeon.
Isabel Del Carmen Spangler
Ranking 3rd in the class of 2018 is Isabel Del Carmen Spangler. Isabel is the daughter of Tanya Butler and the late Tim Spangler, and she is the granddaughter of Cliff and Carmela Kincaid. She enjoys playing with her puppy and spending time with her friends and family. Throughout her 4 years of high school, Isabel has been a member of the Beta Club, Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America, Science and Math Club, and the Spanish Club, serving as president this year. Additionally, Isabel has been a baseball team manager for 4 years, participated in Smith County Youth Leadership, and has completed more than 100 hours of community service. Isabel plans to attend Tennessee Technological University and major in accounting, one day becoming a CPA.
Natalee Rose Brown
Natalee Rose Brown, daughter of Jack and Crystal Nesbitt Brown, ranks 4th in the class of 2018. Natalee is the granddaughter of Gary and Jeanne Nesbitt and the late Jack Brown Sr. and Mildred McKinney Brown. At SCHS, Natalee has been a member of the Interact Club, Science and Math Club, Future Business Leaders of America Club, and the Students Against Destructive Decisions Club. Natalee has also been part of the SCHS Lady Owls Basketball team while also playing for multiple travel basketball teams. She has received awards for perfect attendance and honor roll, and she is a graduate of Smith County Youth Leadership. Natalee is a member of South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church, and she has dedicated many hours of her time volunteering at the Nashville Rescue Mission, Kidz Central, Smith County Backpack Program, Smith County Fair, Carthage Rotary Club, and Carthage Elementary School Field Day. After graduation, Natalee Plans to attend Tennessee Technological University, major in nursing, and become a neonatal nurse. She eventually would like to go back to school to become a neonatologist.
Lauren Elizabeth Wright
Lauren Elizabeth Wright ranks 5th in the class of 2018. Lauren is the daughter of Larry and Tamara Wright and the granddaughter of the late Eddie Glennon and Darlene Glennon and the Late Kaye Wilson and Jim Wilson. Lauren attends Kempville Chapel Old Time Methodist Church, and as volunteered on mission trips to Honduras. Her academic achievements include receiving awards for academic excellence and honor roll and being an active member of the HOSA and Science and Math Clubs. Additionally, Lauren was captain of the SCHS volleyball team. After graduating, Lauren plans to study pre-medicine at Carson-Newman University and become a trauma surgeon for the United States Army.
Makenna Celeste Moore
Makenna Celeste Moore ranks 6th in the class of 2018. Makenna is the daughter of Robin and Scott Moore; she is the granddaughter of Ricky and Vicky Givens and the late Kathy Blaire and Steve Moore. Makenna enjoys playing basketball and spending time with her family and friends. She is a member of Kempville Chapel Old Time Methodist Church, has attended mission trips to Honduras, and has volunteered her time at the Smith County Fair as well as Kidz Central. Makenna is a graduate of Smith County Youth Leadership, was selected as a Girls State delegate, and is a recipient of the Janet Bailey Dedication Award. Makenna played varsity basketball for the Lady Owls, and has been a member of several clubs and organizations, including FBLA, SADD, Student Council, Science and Math, Beta Club, and Interact Club. Makenna plans to attend Tennessee Technological University and major in nursing with the goal of one day becoming a nurse anesthetist.
William Thomas Broyles
William Thomas Broyles, son of Tom and Amy Broyles, ranks 7th in the class of 2018. William is the grandson of Jim and Betsy Broyles and Carroll Fowler and the Late Frank Fowler. He enjoys hunting, playing soccer, and working on the family farm. William attends First Baptist Church of Carthage. At SCHS, he has been a member of the Beta Club, Science and Math Club, FFA, FBLA, and Hunting Club. As an athlete, William, captain of the soccer team, has been distinguished as 1st team All-District for soccer, Soccer Team Offensive MVP, and 2nd Team All-Region for football. After graduating in May, William intends to attend Tennessee Technological University and major in engineering.
Katherine Renee Wright
Katherine Renee Wright is ranked 8th in her graduating class. Katherine is the daughter of Barbara Miller and Donald Wright, and she is the granddaughter of Patricia and Roy Wright and Bobby and Susan Perry. Katherine attends South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church. She has been a member of the Science and Math Club, Beta Club, HOSA Club, and SADD Club. Katherine has received recognition for academic excellence and for being on the honor roll. She also served as captain of the SCHS Lady Owls Soccer Team. After high school, Katherine plans to study pre-medicine at Tennessee Technological University before going to medical school and becoming a surgeon.
Aaron Carver
Ranking 9th in the class of 2018 is Aaron Carver. Aaron is the son of Ronnie and Mary Carver and the grandson of Dortch and Teenie Carver and Frances Williams. Aaron enjoys playing guitar and shooting guns, and he attends Defeated Creek Missionary Baptist Church. At SCHS, Aaron has been an active member of the Beta Club and the FFA.
Eva Elizabeth Etheridge
Eva Elizabeth Etheridge ranks 10th in the class of 2018. Eva is the daughter of John and Rhonda Etheridge and the granddaughter of Tom and Carole Miles. Eva attends First Baptist Church Carthage, where she assists with preschool Sunday school. She enjoys hiking, playing piano, watching Netflix, and spending time with her friends. Eva played volleyball at SCHS for 4 years, serving as captain for 3. She is the Vice President of the Spanish Club, the secretary of the Beta Club, and is a member of the Science and Math Club. Eva was selected as a Girls State delegate, received an award for academic excellence from SCHS, and was named second-team all-district for volleyball. After graduating, Eva plans to attend Carson-Newman University and follow the Health Pre-Professions program, majoring in biochemistry. Afterwards, she plans to enroll in pharmacy school and obtain her Ph.D.
