Smith County has strong second half to win 24-16 over Sequatchie County

The Smith County Owls won 24-16 on the long trip down to take on the Sequatchie County Indians on Friday night.

The Owls offense got started early, taking a long drive and finding the end zone off a Colton Windham run and 2 pt conversion from Johnny Lyda to DJ Burk to go up 8-0 with 5:24 left in the first.

The Indians bounced back, and looked on the brink of scoring themselves but the owls were able to force a turnover on downs at the goal line to get the ball back. The Owls offense couldn’t bounce back with a score, being forced to punt back, and this time Sequatchie was able to get back inside the 5, but the Owls forced a fumble to get the ball back.

The Owls offense was forced to punt again, and this time Sequatchie bounced back and found the end zone on their third possession as the Indians quarterback ran it in and tied it up following a two point conversion to make it 8-8 with a little over 7 minutes left in the first half. Sequatchie was able to strike again after stopping the Owls, scoring and converting another two point conversion to take a 16-8 lead with 3:23 left in the second quarter

Early in the second half the Smith County offense looked as if they were going to tie it up, but after they were forced to give the ball back to Sequatchie County, the Owls were able to get the scoring going by getting a safety to narrow the score 10-16. The Owls looked in good position to score on the following drive, but a fumble inside the 5 gave the Indians the ball back. The Owls defense stopped the Indians on three downs, and Smith County found the end zone three plays later as Lyda ran it in to tie it and the PAT gave the Owls a 17-16 lead with 10 minutes left in the game

The Owls defense kept up their momentum, stopping the Indians again, and the Owls offense able to get down to the 25 yard line, but a turnover on downs gave the Indians the ball back midway through the fourth quarter. The Smith County defense did their job again and forced a punt on three downs.

The Owls were able to provide a crucial blow, as Burk was able to break a 54 yard run to get to the 6 yard line, with Burk running it in 2 plays later to take a 24-16 lead following the PAT with 3:23 left in the game.

The Owls were able to squash any hopes the Indians had at coming back, getting a big stop on fourth down to get the ball back with 1:26 left and Smith County was able to kneel and run out the clock.

The Owls will host DeKalb County next week for their Senior night on 10-9
