On Saturday, May 6 the Smith County Cattlemen’s Association held their annual Open Beef Show at the Smith County Agriculture Center in Carthage. This was the fourth year of the show and featured classes for commercial heifers and steers, as well as registered bulls and heifers. Members of the local association cooked hamburgers and homemade desserts for the participants and spectators, and helped in various other ways with the event.
Nearly 50 youth exhibited 104 head of cattle during the show. Classes were sponsored by local association members as well as businesses interested in livestock production. Smith County Farm Bureau sponsored showmanship classes, while Twisted Fitterz handed out show sticks to the winners. A special award was given for the Supreme Champion Heifer in memory of Stanley Dillehay, a former director of the Smith County Cattlemen’s Association. Samantha Roberts’s February 2016 Angus heifer was this year’s Supreme Champion Heifer.
The Open Beef Show serves as the primary fundraiser for the Smith County Cattlemen’s Association. Proceeds from the event will be used for scholarships awarded to graduating seniors in the county, to provide opportunities for Junior Association members, and help with expenses for field days and production meetings throughout the year.
