The Smith County Cattlemen’s Association held their 2017 annual meeting on January 23 at the Smith County Ag Center in Carthage. Approximately 120 producers enjoyed a catered supper from Wright’s BBQ sponsored by Custom Blend Enterprises and Tri-Green Equipment of Cookeville.
For the 3rd year in a row, a bred heifer was auctioned as a fundraiser that will help with the scholarship fund. The AI bred commercial heifer was donated by Baker Farms this year. Marvin Jackson of Custom Blend Enterprises purchased the heifer for $1,700. Scholarship recipients for 2016 were Julie Phillips, Lucas Ferrell, Jeremiah McCaleb, and Lena Broyles.
After a presentation on the importance of minerals from Custom Blend, President Danny Baker recognized outgoing directors and oversaw the election of new directors. UT Extension Agent Chris Hicks gave an update from UT Extension and Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association President Steve Anderson, a Smith County native, spoke on the benefits of TCA membership.
One of the highlights of the annual meeting each year is the presentation of the Producer of the Year award. This year’s winner was Derrick Triplett of Triplett Angus Farm. Besides having a very nice cow/calf operation, Mr. Triplett has been a longtime supporter of the Smith County Cattlemen’s Association, serving twice as president.
