(Smith County Insider Press) Nashville, Tenn. – On Thursday, March 24, the Smith County Adult and Youth Leadership groups visited the Tennessee State Capitol for their Government Day. The groups started their morning with breakfast with Senator Bob Corker at the Chamber of Commerce. Around 9 A.M., the two leadership groups departed for Nashville, along with the Smith County Chamber Director, Billy Woodard, and the Smith County Mayor, Michail Nesbitt.
Upon arrival at the capitol building, both groups got to sit in on the Senate and House sessions for a short time until they had their picture made with Governor Bill Haslam. After having a photo taken with the governor, the groups enjoyed a tour of the capitol building. Following the tour, Mrs. Carol McDonald, the Assistant Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture spoke with the groups about how agriculture effects Tennessee.
After lunch with Senator Mae Beavers and Representative Terri Lynn Weaver, both groups spent the remainder of the day in one of the legislative committee rooms learning about different departments of Tennessee Government. A few of the people who spoke to the groups were Bob Raines, the Executive Director of the Tennessee Entertainment Commission, Jason Seay, the Assistant Director of the Tennessee Student Financial Association, and Jody Sliger, the Director of the Three Star Program with the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development.
