Smith County Senior High 4-Her’s Shelbie Manus, Carson Pope, Grace Harville, and 4-H volunteer leader, Cozette Manus, had quite an eventful few days on March 19-22, 2017. This group had the opportunity to experience one of Tennessee 4-H’s main state-wide events: Tennessee 4-H Congress. Through this conference, youth in the 9th and 10th grades learn how to develop a better understanding of citizenship and see how it relates to everyday living. 4-H Congress offers leadership experiences, encourages 4-Her’s to assume and continue leadership roles in their communities, and provides experiences for students to develop a greater appreciation of the history and traditions of Tennessee. Students took part in activities such as the State Public Speaking contest, where Smith County’s Grace Harville placed second in the state. Other activities that youth were involved in were Know Your Government in which 4-H members discussed and voted on fictional bills at the State Capitol Senate and House Chambers. Students attended educational sessions at Tennessee State University that covered different governmental topics such as women’s rights and political cartoons. Delegates also got to meet with Senator Mae Beavers and Representative Terri Lynn Weaver. The General Jackson Showboat cruise down the Cumberland River was a highlight for all 375 Congress participants. On Tuesday night, everyone enjoyed the Citizenship Banquet where 4-H donors and contest winners were recognized. Also, the newly elected Congress officers were initiated. This was an amazing experience for all who attended.
