Smith County 4-H News – Katie Clark – UT Extension Agent

Melody Austin, Keeleigh Smith, Lauren Gregory, Bailey Chapman, Seth Tyree, Emma Baker, Alyssa Richmond, Dylan Richmond, Olivia Jarvis, Chloe Fleenor, Katelyn Williamson, April Cowell, Alanna Apicelli, Molly Jones, Ella Gentry, Jorja Summers, Addie Hawkins, Anna Kate Sanders, Maddy Sampson, Libby Carter, and Libby Miller enjoy a day learning in the kitchen.

Twenty-one 4-H members met on Friday, July 14, for the first annual “Let’s Cook” culinary camp presented by Smith County 4-H. Throughout the day campers learned about safety in the kitchen, converting measurements, and following recipes. Each 4-H’er was able to participate in making a healthy smoothie, chocolate chip muffins, homemade personal pizzas, and cupcakes. Participants were also able to decorate their own cupcakes, and then they were judged based on neatness and creativity. Campers participated in a “food fear factor” where they tried foods they may have never tried before, like brussel sprouts, honeydew melon, plumcots, cauliflower, and kiwi. Campers enjoyed learning, trying new things, and having fun with friends.

A special thank you to Chef David Dillehay for his help in designing and teaching the camp, and to First Baptist Church Gordonsville for allowing us to use their facility.
