Shoplifting Leads to Pursuit and Wreck

January 12, 2016

(Smith County Insider Press) Carthage, Tenn. – Friday afternoon, January 8, authorities received a report of shoplifters leaving Wal-Mart with stolen merchandise. The vehicle they left in was described to be a white Ford Crown Victoria.

Minutes after hearing about the reported shoplifting on the radio, a South Carthage Officer spotted a car that matched that description exiting the clover leaf headed east on Hwy. 70. The South Carthage Officer initiated his blue lights and sirens to attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle began traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control, and exited the right side of the roadway. Upon exiting the roadway, the vehicle traveled in the ditch for a couple hundred feet, and came to a rest after it hit a driveway entrance and flipped over on its roof.

There were three occupants inside of the vehicle. The driver was Kyle Daniel Overstreet and the two passengers were Adrienne Gray and a two-year old female. Gray is approximately seven months pregnant. Overstreet was fully ejected from the vehicle upon hitting the driveway entrance, and he landed in the middle of the road.

Overstreet was reported to have been in critical condition and gray and the 2-year-old were in stable condition.

Both lanes of Hwy 70 was blocked for over an hour, while the scene was cleaned up. Trooper Adam Cothron of the Tennessee Highway Patrol worked the scene, with assistance from Trooper Withers, the Smith County Sheriff’s Department, Carthage City Police Department, South Carthage Police Department, Smith County EMS, and Smith County Rescue Squad. Dale’s Towing and Recovery removed the vehicle from the scene.

Kyle Daniel Overstreet has an extensive arrest history and has been arrested three times since August 2015. On 8/28/15 he was arrested for reckless endangerment, on 10/29/15 he was arrested for assault and theft of property, and on Christmas Eve, 12/24/15, he was arrested for aggravated assault and theft of property. Overstreet was also indicted in the recent December session of the Grand Jury for one count of reckless endangerment with deadly weapon involved, one count of reckless driving, and one count of driving on the wrong side of the roadway.
