(Smith County Insider Press) Defeated, Tenn. – Over the past weekend, authorities have reported as many as 70 mailboxes were damaged or destroyed in the Northern part of Smith County.
A few of the roads that were targeted were Gladdice Road, Little Salt Lick Road, Friendship Hollow Road, Kemp Hollow Road, Lakeside Drive, Buffalo Road, Sloan Branch Road, and several others.
The Smith County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating this incident. Sheriff Steve Hopper asks that if you have any information that may help authorities find out who caused the destruction, to call the Smith County Sheriff’s Office at (615) 735-2626.
Mailboxes are considered federal property, and federal law (Title 18, United States Code, Section 1705), makes it a crime to vandalize them (or to injure, deface or destroy any mail deposited in them). Violators can be fined up to $250,000, or imprisoned for up to three years, for each act of vandalism.
