(Smith County Insider Press) Gordonsville, Tenn. – Just after 12pm on Sunday, November 27, Smith County 911 received a call reporting a rollover accident with possible injuries on I-40 around the 252 East bound mile marker.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol, Smith County EMS, Smith County Sheriff’s Department, Smith County Rescue Squad, and Southside First Responders were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arriving on scene, first responders found a woman in the right hand ditch of I-40 with a service dog.
According to Trooper Jackson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s report, the woman was identified as Tosha Hatfield, 28, of Knoxville, TN. Hatfield was driving a 2005 white Jeep Liberty.
Hatfield was traveling on I-40 when she exited the right side of the roadway and struck a rock embankment. After striking the embankment, Hatfield’s vehicle rolled over and came to a final rest on its side.
When the vehicle stopped, Hatfield’s service dog exited the vehicle and began to run West bound on the shoulder of the road. Hatfield exited the vehicle in pursuit of the dog. The dog suffered internal injuries and passed away shortly after the accident.
Hatfield was transported to Riverview Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
Hatfield was cited for two misdemeanor drug citations and failure to exercise due care.
