For this week’s First Responder Friday, Smith County Insider interviewed Roy Masters, a Rescue Technician who lives in Defeated, Tennessee.
Roy has worked as a First Responder for about a year.

SCI: When did you realize this is what you wanted to do?
RM: When I was on my way to school one morning and a friend of mine was involved in a motor vehicle accident in front of me and the satisfaction I got from assisting him and EMS was beyond anything I’ve ever felt.
SCI: What is the best thing about your job?
RM: Here recently we’ve been doing a lot of rope training and myself and another new member are planning on going to get certified in rope rescue to better help our community.
SCI: What is your proudest work accomplishment?
RM: Getting a better understanding of what all takes place in a motor vehicle accident.
SCI: What advice would you give someone looking to go into your field?
RM: You have to be dedicated and not hesitate when a decision needs to be made.
SCI: What are your favorite hobbies and activities outside of work?
RM: Fishing and hunting are most definitely the best. Everyone knows this.
SCI: Is there anything else you want to share with the readers of Smith County Insider?
RM: Please… if you see an emergency personnel out and about tell him/her thank you for your service. The majority of our county’s emergency personnel are volunteer and most of them have to leave their families to take care of another’s in the time of need. It’s a big sacrifice that us as volunteers face but we know someone will have to do the job. I’m glad to serve with many great people, and the residents of Smith County have a well prepared set of people to help when it’s needed most.
