Monday, June 29th, Smith County Clerk, Clifa Norris, announced that her office would no longer be issuing any marriage licenses or preforming any marriage ceremonies. Soon thereafter, she received a phone call from the state telling her if she didn’t give out marriage licenses to all couples, she would likely get sued and lose. As of Tuesday, June 30th, the Smith County Clerk’s office is in compliance with the Supreme Court’s SCOTUS ruling, and are issuing all marriage licenses. WSMV interviews Norris about her decision.
