(Smith County Insider Press) – On January 6, 2020, Deputy Matthew White heard Carthage City Dispatch advise there was a possible drunk driver about to enter Carthage on Highway 53. Deputy White was in the area when the call was given out, and he made contact with the vehicle. Checking the tags on the vehicle, dispatch advised that the registration on the vehicle was unconfirmed.

According to the police report, Deputy White asked the driver of the vehicle, Mazel Elbaz (32, Pleasant Shade), if she had insurance on the vehicle. Elbaz was unable to provide proof of insurance and stated that she did not have a valid license. Elbaz began looking for her registration in the glovebox, and Officer Hugo Teasley with the Carthage Police department saw in plain view a white pill bottle in the glove box.

According to the police report, Officer Teasley asked the driver for permission to see the bottle, and she gave consent. Inside was a crystal like substance and a cut straw with a crystal residue. While speaking with the driver, Deputy White smelled the odor one would associate with marijuana. The driver was asked to step out of the vehicle for a pat down, and approximately 10 grams of marijuana was found in her pocket along with a package of rolling papers in her jacket.

Elbaz was transported to the Smith County Jail for booking and was advised that if she had any other drugs on her which she did not turn over, she would be charged with a felony for carrying them into the jail. She advised Deputy White that she had marijuana hidden in her knee brace. Elbaz was permitted to remove the marijuana and handed Deputy White a folded piece of cardstock containing approximately 0.6 grams of marijuana.

Elbaz is charged with driving on revoked, possession of methamphetamine, possession of schedule VI, and felony possession of drug paraphernalia.
