(Smith County Insider Press) — A parole search of an individual led to the discovery of drug transactions taking place.
Sgt. Junior Fields of the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, along with Sgt. Jimmy Lankford and Deputy Robin Bellar went to a Bradford Hill Road residence for a parole search of Charles Hancock Jr on July 26.
Upon arrival, Fields spoke to Hancock, who was standing outside at the time of his arrival. According to the arrest warrant, Fields advised Hancock why they were there and that they would be searching his residence.
Fields asked for Hancock’s phone and after reading messages, it was apparent that he had been purchasing methamphetamine recently, according to the arrest warrant.
According to the arrest warrant, a text message conversation had Hancock set to meet Ralph Overstreet (37, Lebanon) at the South Side Utility District and to bring $300 for said drugs so he could go pick them up.
Sgt. Kendra Grisham and Agent Holder arrived on scene, and it was decided that they would all go to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office to continue the drug investigation.
According to the arrest warrant, Overstreet stated he would be at the South Side Utility District in ten minutes.
Holder and Grisham proceeded to the South Side Utility District. Fields notified Sheriff Hopper of what was going on, and he was in the area.
Upon arrival to the South Side Utility District, Overstreet and a passenger identified as Overstreet’s boss were detained.
According to the arrest warrant, Overstreet was found to be in possession of four morphine pills and six oxycodone pills.
Overstreet was placed under arrest.
According to the arrest warrant, Overstreet admitted to having been messaging who he through was Hancock and stated that he was going to get the methamphetamine from Charles Ray Hughes (35, Carthage), who lived just up the street.
Officer Keith Crook transported Overstreet to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.
Fields, Holder and Hopper went to a Cedar Street residence, where contact was made with Hughes inside after he had ran back inside upon seeing them pull up, according to the arrest warrant.
According to the arrest warrant, Hughes’ mother answered the door for Holder and Fields, and Fields advised her that they needed to speak to Mr. Hughes, at which time he came out of the hall way.
Fields advised Hughes why they were there and placed him under arrest.
Inside Hughes’ room, a small amount of marijuana, a set of digital scales and a box of sandwich bags were located in the top of his closet.
According to the arrest warrant, Hughes advised his mother that he had his methamphetamine in her bedroom closet under some blankets.
Upon searching said area, Fields located a bag containing approximately 18,8 grams of crystal methamphetamine.
Hughes was placed under arrest and transported to the Smith County Jail Facility for booking.
During the investigation, it was found that Shayla Stewart (37, Carthage) was involved in communications for drug transactions. According to the arrest warrant, she agreed to sell three morphine pills for $8 each.
Upon reaching the residence, Stewart did not come outside, at which Fields and Holder knocked on the door and she answered, according to the arrest warrant.
Upon speaking to Stewart, she admitted to having agreed to sell three of her Kadian (morphine) pills, according to the arrest warrant.
Stewart was placed under arrest and transported to the Smith County Jail Facility for booking.
Warrants were obtained on Overstreet for Criminal Conspiracy to Sell Schedule II Methamphetamine, Possession of Schedule II (Morphine) for Resale, and Possession of Schedule II (Oxycodone) for Resale.
Hughes is charged with Criminal Conspiracy to Sell Schedule II (methamphetamine), Possession of Schedule IV, Possession of Schedule II (crystal methamphetamine) for Resale, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Stewart is charged with Possession of Schedule II (morphine) for Resale and Criminal Conspiracy to Sell Schedule II (morphine).
