From December 10-11, 2021, much of the Southeast and Midwest endured severe weather, with 59 tornadoes reported by the National Weather Service and 90 fatalities at the time of this writing. Smith County was spared from any significant damage, but an EF0 tornado that traveled 7.3 miles with maximum winds of 80 MPH has been reported by the National Weather Service Nashville. The tornado was 75 yards wide and was on the ground for 5 minutes from 4:05 AM until 4:10 AM. Please note that the report is considered preliminary and subject to change as more data is gathered.
The National Weather Service report states:
The tornado touched down on Upper Ferry Road in Carthage and moved northeast along the east side of Carthage uprooting several small trees and snapping large tree limbs. The storm crossed the Cumberland River and caused tree damage and moderate roof damage to a structure on McClures Bend Land east of Carthage. The tornado continued east, crossing the Cumberland River and Sullivan Bend before lifting on Waynick Road in Jackson County where it caused minor tree damage.
Other damage from the storms was reported throughout Smith County, including roof damage, barns, and trees. County and municipal crews were out early clearing roadways of blockages from downed trees, and Upper Cumberland Electric had to repair power lines damaged by the storms.
A total of fifteen tornadoes were confirmed for the Middle Tennessee area, but the more severe areas include western Tennessee and Kentucky. In West Tennessee, four people have been confirmed dead. For Kentucky, the death toll is currently at 76.
