Bearwaller Gap Trail
On Sunday afternoon, August 20, Smith County 911 received a call reporting a missing hiker on the Bearwaller Gap Trail in Defeated, TN. Authorities found the hiker’s truck parked in the parking lot beside the Defeated Creek Campground. The hiker had last been seen on Saturday afternoon around 4pm.
The Smith County Rescue Squad began searching for the hiker on Sunday night around 9:30pm, along with the assistance of Sgt. Junior Fields of the Smith County Sheriff’s Office and his K-9 Unit. The search continued through Sunday night into Monday morning. Around 11am on Monday morning, another K-9 unit from Morgan County was called in to assist in the search.
Around 5:30pm on Monday, August 21, Smith County Rescue Squad Member’s located the missing hiker deceased. The hiker was identified as Timothy Wood, 59, of Defeated, TN.
Wood was found approximately 100 yards off of the trail.
Wood’s Family setup a GoFundMe account to accept donations, in lieu of flowers, for the Smith County Emergency Management Agency in memory of Tim Wood. As of Saturday afternoon, August 25, the GoFundMe account had already received $1,970. Click HERE to donate.
