A Carthage man was arrested on drug charges after being spotted hanging out in the Smith County High School parking lot Wednesday, January 4.
Sgt. Junior Fields of the Smith County Sheriff’s Office received a call from SRO Ricky Minor, requesting that he come to Smith County High School due to an adult hanging out in the parking lot.
According to the arrest warrant, Mahler advised Fields that Cody Caraker, age 18 of Carthage, was in said parking lot and that he had information that Caraker was using and selling marijuana.
Caraker left the property prior to Fields’ arrival. Mahler advised Fields that Caraker had ran a stop sign while leaving school property and thus requested that he stop said vehicle, according to the arrest warrant.
Fields made contact with Caraker’s vehicle on N. Main Street in Carthage, at which time a stop was initiated on the vehicle at Carmack Avenue.
Upon speaking with Caraker, Fields advised him why he had been stopped and that Mahler would be there in a minute, according to the arrest warrant.
While speaking to Caraker, Fields observed an odor of burnt marijuana, at which time Mahler arrived and also observed the odor, according to the arrest warrant.
K-9 Constance was deployed by Fields for a free air sniff, in which Constance did indicate on the vehicle’s driver side door, according to the arrest warrant.
Upon searching the vehicle, Fields located a small bag of crystal methamphetamine in the door on the driver side, which field tested positive for said drug. Marijuana seeds and stems were also located in the vehicle.
According to the arrest warrant, Caraker admitted that he had smoked marijuana two days prior.
Caraker was placed under arrest and transported to the Smith County Jail Facility for booking.
He is charged with felony possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of schedule II and felony criminal conspiracy.
