A Nashville man has been arrested on numerous charges following his attempt to run from police last Tuesday.
Sgt. Junior Fields of the Smith County Sheriff’s Office responded to 339 Defeated Creek Hwy Tuesday morning, August 16, for an unwanted guest call. Upon arrival, Fields observed a male run from the residence.
Fields chased after the man, and upon catching him at 7 Smith Lane N, he stated that the person Fields was looking for was 30-year-old Matthew Garrett of Nashville. At that time, Fields observed Garrett in a gated pool area of the residence. Fields yelled for him to stop, but he did not.
Garrett was located a short time later hiding in the pool area of the residence behind a wooden privacy area where the pool pump was located.
Garrett did not have permission to be on the property and was taken into custody.
It was then learned that on the day before, Monday, August 15, Garrett had been to the same residence at 339 Defeated Creek Hwy and attempted to pull a woman out of her vehicle when she stopped in her driveway, according to Fields’ report. The woman stated she kicked Garrett, and following that, two men came running down the driveway, at which point Garrett fled the scene.
Sgt. Jimmy Lankford responded to the scene and was unable to locate Garrett at that time.
Garrett is charged with carjacking, assault, resisting arrest, and criminal trespass. He is being held on $13,500 bond and is to appear before the general sessions court on Thursday, October 6, for the carjacking charge. He appeared in court last Thursday for the other three charges.
