Lunchtime storms rock the county, knocking steeple off First Baptist Church Carthage

August 8, 2018

CARTHAGE, Tenn.— A strong line of summertime thunderstorms blew through Smith County on August 8, 2018, bringing down trees, tossing a few patio umbrellas, and even toppling a steeple.

The steeple of First Baptist Church Carthage was brought down in the high winds that were likely in excess of 60 mph.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the steeple collapse, and the church appears to have sustained only minor damage.

According to our weather partner Upper Cumberland Weather, severe weather was not anticipated today, but sometimes summertime storms like the ones earlier can have a mind of their own, tapping into a rich atmospheric environment and becoming quite strong.

Additional showers and thunderstorms remain in the forecast through the remainder of today and into tomorrow.
